Early life

Josh was born in Union, Kentucky, the son of Michelle and Chris Hutcherson. He has a younger brother, Connor,12, born on May 5, 1996, as well as many pets, including 1 dog, Diesel (a boxer), and two cats, Paws and Jell-O. He is 5 ft 4 in tall (1.65m). He has wanted to be an actor since he was four years old, but had only began auditioning for roles in 2002, at the age of 10 after a successful screen test.

Career

Hutcherson’s first role was in the 2002 made-for-television film, House Blend; in the same year, he appeared in an episode of ER. In 2003, he played the lead role in the comedy Miracle Dogs (which was released directly-to-video), starred opposite Peter Falk and Timothy Daly in the made-for-television film, Wilder Days, and had a minor role in the well-reviewed independent film, American Splendor. He performed for the motion-capture imagery in 2004′s The Polar Express and in the 2008 Journey to the Center of the Earth.

In 2005, Hutcherson appeared in several Hollywood films. He had a minor role in the Will Ferrell comedy Kicking & Screaming (which was released in May), voiced Markl in the animated film Howl’s Moving Castle (June), and played the lead roles in Little Manhattan (September) and Zathura, which was released in November to positive reviews. The following year, Hutcherson appeared in the comedy RV, playing the son of Robin Williams‘s character. In his most famous movie so far he played Jesse Aarons in the drama Bridge to Terabithia, which was filmed in New Zealand and released on February 16, 2007, performing well critically and commercially. He had not read the novel that the film is based on before being cast in the role.

Hutcherson’s next role was in Firehouse Dog (released on April 4, 2007), in which he played Shane Fahey, a firefighter‘s son who befriends a dog. Hutcherson filmed Firehouse Dog after Little Manhattan and RV, but before Bridge to Terabithia even though Bridge to Terabithia came out first. He also appeared in the “very dark” independent film drama Winged Creatures, and played the nephew of Brendan Fraser‘s character in Journey 3-D, a new 3-D film version of Journey to the Center of the Earth; filming on Journey 3-D, which was released on July 11, 2008, began in Montreal in June 2006 and ended in October of that year. Hutcherson is also in a movie adaptation of the book Cirque Du Freak coming out in 2009.

Hutcherson has said that he would like to appear in “every type” of film genre.

Personal life

According to Hutcherson, the favorite movie that he made was Zathura. Also, he counts The Dark Knight, Talladega Nights and Transformers as a few of his favorite movies. He is also a big fan of the Cincinnati Bengals – his favorite NFL team.

Hutcherson has cited actor Jake Gyllenhaal as an inspiration. He is homeschooled, and enjoys Math, especially algebra.And when he is not being homeschooled because of a movie, he goes to Ryle Highschool. Hutcherson lives in Union, Kentucky with his family, something that he has said helps him “stay grounded”. According to Hutcherson, he still “get[s] grounded” by his parents. He recently gained his license to drive. Hutcherson has stated that he is “not much of a reader”  and enjoys cars, competing in triathlons, bowling, soccer and playing his guitar. On August 11, 2007, Hutcherson served as the Grand Marshal at the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series Meijer Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway. On September 2008 he went to Italy for his first time. He visited cities like Rome and Milan, and participated in a local event about kids and cinema. He also played a friendly match with an Italian rookie soccer team.He is also very close friends with Bridge to Terabithia co-star AnnaSophia Robb.

Awards

On March 30, 2008, Hutcherson won a Young Artist Award (for Leading Young Actor), as did his co-stars AnnaSophia Robb and Bailee Madison.

Way was born in Belleville, New Jersey to Donald and Donna Lee Way. He first began singing in fourth grade, when he played the part of Peter Pan in a school production of the play. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, taught him to sing, paint, and perform and has referred to her in interviews saying ‘she has taught me everything I know’.

After graduating from Belleville High School in 1995, he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999.

The Umbrella Academy

Way recently began his established career as a comic-book writer, writing for the comic miniseries, The Umbrella Academy. The Umbrella Academy was first unleashed in the Dark Horse 2007 free comic book day issue on May 5th. Since then, an eight-page story was put up on MySpace, entitled Safe & Sound and the first official issue was released on September 19th 2007. The first issue sold out and there will be a second printing on October 17th 2007.

Music and My Chemical Romance

In 2001, Way was working in the comic industry in New York when the September 11 attacks occurred. This event changed Way dramatically; he told Spin magazine, “I literally said to myself, ‘Fuck art. I’ve gotta get out of the basement. I’ve gotta see the world. I’ve gotta make a difference!’” Soon after, he formed the band My Chemical Romance. The band’s first song “Skylines and Turnstiles” was inspired by Way’s experience on 9/11.

Music turned out to be an effective means for Way to deal with his long-time battle against depression, alcoholism, prescription drug and illegal drug abuse, leading to the creation of deeply personal songs such as “Helena”, written after the death of his grandmother.
